Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell presented Certificate of Congratulations to the Austin Convention Center team for obtaining LEED-EB Gold Certification

Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell presented a Certificate of Congratulations to the Austin Convention Center team for successfully obtaining LEEDEB Gold Certification.  MWM DesignGroup as a subconsultant to Facilities Engineering Associates contributed to the success of this project through water-saving strategies for the entire 930,000 square feet facility.  The Convention Center has over 415,000 annual visitors; therefore, making this facility energy and resource efficient has a large impact on its annual operating cost as well as its effect on the environment.

Our task was to reduce the potable water consumption in the facility by at least 20%.  We achieved this goal by  retrofitting all the plumbing fixtures such as flush valves and faucet aerators to achieve a water savings of over 200,000 gallons of water per year.  Our firm also did the analysis of the existing water quality pond to determine if the rain water runoff from the convention center directed to this pond was properly managed.  Both of these efforts were important contributions to the project.  According to the United States Green Building Council, the Austin Convention Center is the first in Texas to achieve LEED Gold Certification for Existing Buildings and for scoring the highest point total of ALL convention centers in the EB category.  Congratulations to the entire team including MWM’s Project Manager Veronica Castro de Barrera, AIA, LEED AP and Brian Wells, P.E. for a well-deserved recognition.
